Mysore Method
Learn to take responsibility for your yoga practice... This is a time-honored method of teaching ashtanga yoga. This method receives its name from the city in which it originated and is still practiced. Sri K Pattabhi Jois, our teacher, lives and teaches in Mysore, India at the Ashtanga Yoga Research Institute (link).
Ashtanga Yoga is an ancient system of Yoga that has been passed down from teacher to student, one at a time. In this way, we continue to honor the purity of the practice. The student will receive individual attention, work at their own pace, enjoy the meditative qualities and gain an appreciation for their own practice. Instructors will help with asanas by providing hands on adjustments as well as reminding you of sequencing if you forget. As you progress in the practice the instructors will teach new asanas to add to your ever growing yoga practice! In this way each student will work deeper into postures slowly enabling memorization of asana sequencing and allowing the body to gradually adapt to the practice.
In an interview with Sri K Pattabhi Jois (Guruji), he was asked what is the perfect asana and how do you perfect asana. His reponse, "'Sthira sukham asanam (YS 2.46).' Perfect asana means you can sit for three hours with steadiness and happiness, with no trouble. After you take the legs out of the asana, the body is still and happy. In the method I teach, there are many asanas, and they work with blood circulation, the breathing system, and the focus of the eyes (to develop concentration)...This is the original teaching, the ashtanga yoga method. I've not added anything else. These modern teachings, I don't know...I'm an old man!" From Joyful Living, Jan/Feb 1994
The Mysore program is an empowering way to create and sustain your own practice, no matter where you are in your life's adventure.
